Privacy and cookies

When you visit our site, and subject to the settings of the browser you are using, we may store cookies on your device. A cookie lets a site recognise your browser for the lifetime of that cookie. This page explains which ones are involved and how to control them.

What we use cookies for

  • Adapting the presentation of the site to your device (screen size, operating system).
  • Measuring audience — how many people visit, which pages they read — so we can improve the service.
  • Sharing usage information with our advertising and analytics partners, so that the advertising displayed can be funded and measured.

What we do with the domains you look up

A domain name you submit is used to perform the lookup and may be kept for a short period in a technical cache, so that repeated queries do not overload the public WHOIS servers. We do not publish a list of searched domains, do not associate searches with an identity, and do not sell search data.

Cookies set by third parties

Cookies issued by third parties are governed by those third parties' own privacy policies. We inform you of their purpose as far as we are aware of it, and of the means available to you to make choices about them.

1. Third-party applications embedded in our pages

We may include software from third parties allowing you to share our content or to indicate your opinion about it — for example "Like", "Recommend" or "Share" buttons from social networks such as Facebook, X or LinkedIn. The social network providing such a button may be able to identify you through it even if you did not click it, for instance if you were logged into that network in the same browser while visiting our site.

We have no control over the process these networks use to collect information about your browsing. We recommend reading their privacy policies, which should let you set your preferences directly in your account with each of them.

2. Cookies from advertising content

Advertising content — images, animations, video — displayed in our advertising slots may contain cookies set by third parties: either the advertiser behind the content, or a company acting on the advertiser's behalf. For the lifetime of those cookies, they may be used to count how many times each advert was displayed and clicked, in order to calculate amounts due and produce statistics, and to recognise your device on later visits to sites where the same advertisers or third parties operate, and adapt the advertising shown to you.

This site uses Google AdSense for advertising and Google Analytics for audience measurement. Both are operated by Google, which sets its own cookies and applies its own privacy policy to the data they collect. That policy is set out in how Google uses information from sites that use its services, and you can review or change what is collected in your own Google account settings.

Your choices

Several options are available to you for managing cookies. Any setting you change may alter how you browse our site and the internet in general, and access to some features may depend on cookies being accepted. You can change your choices at any time by the means described below.

Accepting cookies

Whether a cookie is stored on your device depends essentially on your own choice, which you can express and change at any time, free of charge, through the options offered by your browser. If you have allowed cookies to be stored, cookies embedded in the pages and content you view will be stored temporarily in a dedicated area of your device, readable only by their issuer.

Refusing cookies

If you refuse cookies, or delete those already stored, you may no longer be able to use some features needed to browse parts of our site. The same applies where we, or our providers, cannot recognise for technical compatibility purposes the type of browser your device uses, its language and display settings, or the country from which it connects. We decline any responsibility for the consequences of our services working in a degraded way because cookies necessary for their operation could not be stored or read after you refused or deleted them.

How to change your settings, browser by browser

Cookie settings differ from one browser to another. You will find the relevant instructions in your browser's help menu, which will tell you how to change your cookie preferences.
